Wilson St #202, Madison WI Text Box: In high school, I was the only black student in my class to take all advanced courses. This had a profound effect on my social life because I only saw other black students on the way to class and at lunch. My classmates, who were, for the most part, white, often told me that I was different from most black people. I was the exception. I did not know how to respond to them, since most of the students in remedial classes were black, and most of the students getting in fights were also black. My classmates never asked why this was happening. The school administration never tried to understand and address these problems. They seemed to be content with just putting them in detention.
I remember the teachers treating me better than the other black students. Sometimes they got in trouble when they had done nothing wrong. I never understood why. I was very visible in the student body. I now realize that I could have done something to improve their situation if I, instead of just being apathetic, had understood that their success would mean success for the school as a whole. When two groups of people are isolated from one another it is easy for one to make assumptions about the other. When they do this, they often fail to realize that by helping the other, they are also helping themselves.
